Laroque Des Albers (Laroca) is without doubt Catalan. It is made up of two distinct areas. The old part and the ancient. Arranged concentrically around the belvedere tower are the ancient houses and the church. These constitute the higher ground of the town . The names of the streets and areas give a clue to the towns rich and varied history. Place De La Republic; Rue De La Sardane; Rue De la 14 De Juiliet and Rue Des Evades are such examples. On the other hand the fantastic view from some give rise to the names. Rue De la Caniigou being a good example. (It’s where the photo above was taken from) Sauntering around the ancient part is a pastime in itself. (The quaint bars also help) The town is not false; primed or prepared for the tourist. This is it. It’s still a working French town/ village obviously helped by the tourist trade but certainly not spoilt in any way by it. |
